Charles G. Smith

I was born in the 1940’s and was raised in West Virginia through my undergraduate years. I moved to Louisiana to attend graduate school at LSU in 1967. While I have a career in Louisiana as a consulting geologist, art has always been a keen interest and an important part of my professional and daily life. Painting is filling more and more of my quality time in recent years. I began plein-air painting in 2000, taking workshops at Scottsdale Artists’ School and Fredricksburg Artists’ School from Matt Smith and John Budicin. I am particularly interested in representative, plein-air, painting because “being there” gives me my best chance of getting accurate light and color effects in scenes that catch my attention. Painting plein-air also means the paintings are small format and are completed in a single setting. Most of my subjects are rural scenes, close to home in Baton Rouge.
